Blackbird Magic

the birds of Rhiannon, they that wake the dead and lull the living to sleep
Culhwch and Olwen

The common blackbird… has unihemispheric slow-wave sleep… the first animal behavior which uses different regions of the brain to simultaneously control sleep and wakefulness.’

Half asleep and half awake
he carries sleep in his left eye
and wakefulness in his right:

gifts for the living and dead.
His song wakes the dead and
lulls the living to sleep.

When the dead rub sleep
from their eyes and the living
rub away golden circles of wakefulness,

in the space between
the regions of his brain
half asleep and half awake

they dance in golden circles.

  1. Love how you use a scientific fact to inspire your lyric and your continual enquiry into what/who you meet in the nature that surrounds you.
