Prayer for Nos Galan Gaeaf recorded on ‘The Dead Speak’

James Lindenschmidt has recently put together a new Crafted Recording Podcast called ‘The Dead Speak’ for Gods & Radicals as a Samhain special HERE. It features a recording of Pete Wytham & the Cosmic Zombies performing their suitably haunting song ‘Dancing with the Dead’ mixed with readings from C.S.Thompson, Sean Donahue, Rhyd Wildermuth, Yvonne Aburrow, Dr. Bones, Alley Valkyrie and myself. It’s great to hear the voices of other Gods & Radicals writers – many thanks to James – and ‘Hail the dead!’

These are the words from my poem ‘Prayer for Nos Galan Gaeaf’:

Prayer for Nos Galan Gaeaf

I say a prayer
for those between the worlds tonight
for those who passed this year but have not left
for passing is hard for the unprepared
when what comes is shock
and violence

I say a prayer
for those who have walked
the roads of the dead and heard the night hearse
the clatter of hooves the howling of red-eyed hounds

I say a prayer against fear
I say a prayer against fear of the homecoming

for the driver who has run these rounds
for millennia on mist-dark
streets

the proverbial white light for some
for others a moth pressed against the window
is his messenger or a neck brushed
by the wing of a swan

I say a prayer
for the gatherer of souls
for those between the worlds tonight
for those who passed this year but have not left
for passing is hard for the unprepared
when what comes is shock
and violence

I say a prayer
for the gatherer of souls
for those who passed this year against fear
I say a prayer for the next year approaching on the wings
of the dead on Nos Galan Gaeaf
I say a prayer
