Serpent’s Fear

A secret only certain tongues can tell
Lies reprobate within the silent hill
And like a sunken serpent turns and toils
Alone through dark abandoned sandstone tunnels.
The vacant spaces caves keep to themselves
Are rolling r’s and making hidden o’s
In language strange and closed as serpent’s qualms
And omens rattled through its sandstone bones.
The serpent’s broken tongue cannot sing wells
For bedrock breached and shattered aquifer
No longer meet and marry in the hill.
The fractured beast bereaved of holy water
Laments her passing and fears the drills.
